Collection from the Estate of Eugen Wirth

The former director of the Department of Geography at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and dean of German Oriental geography donated his collection to the Museum of Islamic Art.

The earliest photographs are from 1953. Eugen Wirth’s photographic collection focuses on topographic and urban motifs. During his extensive expeditions, he took pictures of almost every historical site and cultural monument in Syria known at the time and thus documented them within their spatial context.

This comprehensive documentation is a meaningful and special testimony to Syria’s historical heritage
