Raqqa Archive Michael Meinecke

This comprehensive collection of documents is closely related to the work of Michael Meinecke, who directed the excavations in the early Abbasid palace city of Raqqa for many years.

The Raqqa Archive belongs to the German Archaeological Institute and is kept as a permanent loan at the Museum of Islamic Art. It comprises an extensive photographic library with more than 4000 labelled boxes containing black-and-white photographs, an archive of plans with more than one thousand original plans and a complete written documentation of 12 excavation campaigns.

Almost all of the buildings documented therein are built over today and are no longer discernible.  Material associated with architectural evidence from the wider Raqqa region also belongs to this archive.
