Collection and Database Stefan Weber
Stefan Weber, director of the Museum of Islamic Art, lived and worked for many years as an Islamic scholar and art historian in Syria and Lebanon.
His collection and database contain 120.000 photographs on the architectural history of the entire region. On the Syrian capital of Damascus, where he did research at the German Archaeological Institute from 1996 to 2001, he wrote a fundamental work
on the history of late Ottoman urban construction and architecture as a testimony to cultural change and social development. He managed restoration and museum projects on site.
For the Berlin Museum, he represents a highly participatory approach to social responsibility as well as the protection and preservation of cultural heritage – one of many initiatives in this respect is the Syrian Heritage Archive Project.
